Euro-MPs today (8 September) agreed new rules on animal testing after long negotiations with member states.
The final deal allows countries with higher animal welfare standards to keep those controls, but brings in a minimum level of protection throughout Europe.
South West Euro-MP Graham Watson said;
"This hard fought compromise allows countries like the UK to maintain high standards whilst laying the foundations elsewhere in Europe upon which we can later build.
"Not only is this good news for animals, but also scientists who now have EU-wide clarity."
